The Walking Dead: The Final Season is slated to be released on 14 August 2018. Developed and published by Telltale Games, this latest instalment is said to be the final game to use the rather outdated Telltale engine.

The game will be made available for Windows 10, PS4 and Xbox One. It is said that subsequent Walking Dead platforms will employ the Unity game engine. Although the Telltale engine has been in place since 2004, many feel that it has not aged well. This actually makes a great deal of sense, as the games themselves have taken on a life of their own in terms of graphics and sheer action. Although users can expect many of the same experiences associated with the Walking Dead franchise, there are a handful of interesting improvements worth noting.

A Continuation of the Tale or the End of a Chapter?

One of the strengths associated with the Walking Dead franchise has been its ability to promote a long and in-depth story line. In this latest chapter, we see Clementine emerge as an adult. She is also the primary protagonist. She has found an abandoned school and after years of running, she might finally be able to find a true “home”. However, this will not be possible without making a number of sacrifices along the way. While still fighting for her life, she must also guard an orphaned child named AJ. It is thought that The Walking Dead: The Final Season will provide an emotionally charged element to the plot; ideally suited for those who have remained die-hard fans over the years.

A Potential Paradigm Shift

One of the issues which has plagued Telltale over the years is the fact that their game engine was unable to meet the needs of a growing audience. This is said to be the main reason why Unity was apparently selected as a replacement. Although future Telltale ventures are uncertain, the shift to Unity should be great news for aficionados of the genre. It will be interesting to see what additional details are released before the expected release date.
